About Same Sky

When I lived in Japan, someone in Australia - I honestly don’t remember who it was - asked me how I could be friends with people who didn’t speak English properly. At first I was simply shocked by the question, but later I realised that without being exposed to other cultures, it’s a logical question to ask.

I’ve lived in four different countries - Germany, Slovakia, Japan and Australia - and travelled to a whole lot more. I’ve taught English as a second language to adults from well over twenty countries. I’m married to an Austrian-born German and his friends are from another myriad of nations. My encounters with these countries and these people have taught me two things: everybody does things differently, and everybody’s the same.

In other words, we’re all under the Same Sky. I’ve learnt never to assume a thought or habit different to my own is strange or wrong - it’s just different, but people are people wherever you go. The Same Sky Magazine is one way for me to collect these thoughts and to tell others about them, too. Exploring cultural differences and similarities is a fascinating process, and a lot of fun too.
