Are Japanese Husbands Chauvinistic?

Japanese woman with dogI’m still a little baffled by modern Japanese marriages. Back on my old blog I wrote a post about the National Chauvinistic Husbands Association in Japan. Yes, such an organisation truly exists, and double yes, there’s a need for one. And the story behind all that’s an interesting one.

Why Japanese Men Need A Chauvinistic Husbands Association

I like Japanese men, I really do.And I don’t entirely blame them for the existence of the National Chauvinistic Husbands Association. It’s just culture, tradition, and a long time without change. That means that a lot of Japanese men in the past, and still a good few today, have gone out, worked hard, ignored their wives and never imagined that they should help with the housework, or have any strong emotional connection to their wife. And until recently, Japanese women couldn’t do much about it. If they had a serious problem with their relationship and wanted to divorce, they faced serious shame issues, and no legal right to getting half of their husband’s pension, either.

Times are changing in Japan. From a legal standpoint, the divorce laws changed in 2007 so that women can leave a marriage and have the right to half of everything, including the pension their husband has accumulated. Some husbands have realised they’re at risk of losing both their companion and half their money and have decided to do something about it. Other husbands have simply seen enough of the world beyond Japan to figure out that they need to work on their marriage, and learn to do things like say “I love you” without being embarrassed.

Japanese Husbands Are Improving

The National Chauvinistic Husbands Association has been training husbands to be good at their half of the relationship. They give men a ranking on the good husband scale yet very few men have reached the peak of “10″ yet - that’s not surprising because there are 460 tips for a good marriage they have to study first. A Level 1 husband “is still in love with his wife after three years of marriage” and a Level 5 guy can “take a walk with his wife while holding hands’. Reaching up to Levels 8, 9 and 10 signifies an ability to apologise, be grateful and express his love.

The anecdotal evidence is that a number of Japanese husbands are improving. To be perfectly fair, I’m now starting to wonder if the women are holding up their side of the bargain too. This is definitely an issue I’ll be exploring further.

Really? Japanese men chauvinistic? In my experience, my Japanese husband was also my bestest husband. Now that I’m seeing and experiencing just how bad Korean men are, I long for a new Japanese husband. Will have to look into it soon. :)

Hey Anna, well, I guess it all depends on the individual! I can’t compare. I’ve only ever had a German husband … and he’s pretty nice. Thanks for reading!
